The Heart of the Matter Series is an ongoing series and has challenged me to look at the heart in a way that wasn't 'trite'. I have always been drawn to the heart image and have found it intriguing that the human heart can be so strong and yet, at times, can be so fragile. A Woman’s Heart is based on the Native American proverb that says, “It is good to tell one’s heart.” Don’t Wear Your Heart On Your Sleeve deals with the heart's fragility, and Healing a Wounded Heart illustrates the heart's strength after our family experienced personal tragedy.

"I consider the process of art as being the most important element in the doing of art. It is a test of our humanity. In creating art, people and events are remembered; and we can relive all the emotions of those thoughts."
---Frank LaPena, 1998

Chiapas is full of contradiction and clashes of culture . . . Mayan crosses, ribbons of meaning, mirrors to reflect Indian prayers to the saints, Indian languages and Coca Cola used in ceremonies.
